My firewall got nuts, please help anyone?

Good evening

I am a n00b when it comes to pcs. I ordered a mcafee antivirus...soft, that was from the college I will go to. And after that and a checking for trojans, I could no longer use firefox or MSN messenger. I deleted them and downloaded them again, turned off-turned on my computer thousands times, but nothing is working. I keep getting a message that something needs to be done with my fire wall and HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP ports.

Recommendations someone?

Sometimes malware will leave redirects in the computers hosts file (for xp it's windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts) I'd check that first and make sure it only has couple entrys for localhost and ip address 127.0.0.1
